Why odds formats differ
Odds formats are just different notations for the same price. Asian sportsbooks commonly show Malay, Hong Kong or Indonesian odds, while decimal odds are popular for their simplicity.
Switching format does not change what you win. It only changes how the price is written, so pick the one you have the option to calculate in your head without hesitation.

Decimal odds
Decimal odds show the total return per unit staked, including your stake. Multiply the stake by the odds to get the full payout.
Worked example: RM50 at 2.40 returns RM120, of which RM70 is profit. The implied probability is 1 divided by the odds, so 2.40 implies about 41.7%.

Hong Kong and Malay odds
Hong Kong odds show profit only, so they equal decimal odds minus one. A Hong Kong price of 1.40 is the same as decimal 2.40, and a RM50 stake wins RM70 profit.
Malay odds run from -1 to +1. A positive Malay price such as 0.70 means you win RM0.70 profit for every RM1 staked. A negative price such as -0.80 means you risk RM0.80 to win RM1, so a RM40 stake at -0.80 would win RM50 profit.

Indonesian odds
Indonesian odds work like American odds divided by 100. A positive price such as +1.50 shows profit per unit staked, while a negative price such as -2.00 shows how much you must stake to win one unit.
| Format | Even money | Favourite example |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal | 2.00 | 1.50 |
| Hong Kong | 1.00 | 0.50 |
| Malay | 1.00 | 0.50 |
| Indonesian | +1.00 | -2.00 |

Converting a price yourself
If the bet slip does not offer your preferred format, you are able to convert by hand.
- Start from Hong Kong odds by subtracting 1 from the decimal price.
- If the Hong Kong figure is 1.00 or lower, the Malay price is the same number.
- If it is above 1.00, the Malay price is -1 divided by the Hong Kong figure.
- Check your result by working out the return on a RM10 stake in both formats.

How do I change the odds format at ONG777?
Where a format choice is offered, it usually sits in the sportsbook settings, in a drop-down near the top of the market list, or on the bet slip itself. The setting changes how prices are displayed, not which bets you have the option to place, and it normally stays saved to your own account or browser.
Change the format before you decide to start building a slip rather than halfway through. A slip that switches from decimal to Malay while you are reading it is an easy way to misjudge a price, especially on handicap markets where Malay odds can be negative.
If you use more than one device, take time to check the format on each. A browser that has cleared its data may fall back to the default display until you set it again.

Implied probability and the bookmaker margin
Every price can be turned into an implied probability, which is the chance of the outcome that the price suggests. In decimal odds this is 1 divided by the price. Adding up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market shows the margin built into it.
As one practical example, a two-way handicap market priced at 1.90 on each side implies about 52.6% for each side, or 105.2% in total. The extra 5.2% is the margin, and it is why backing both sides of the same market loses money over time.
Comparing margins between markets helps you understand the cost of a bet. Main handicap and over/under lines often carry smaller margins than correct-score or player markets, though this varies by event and sportsbook.
- Decimal 1.50 implies about 66.7%
- Decimal 2.00 implies 50%
- Decimal 3.00 implies about 33.3%
- Decimal 5.00 implies 20%
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Why do some Malay odds have a minus sign?
A negative Malay price marks a selection where you stake more than you are able to win. The number shows what you risk to win one unit of profit.
Does the odds format affect the bookmaker margin?
No. The margin is built into the underlying price, and every format shows that same price with the same margin.
How do I find the implied probability from Hong Kong odds?
Add 1 to the Hong Kong price to get the decimal price, then divide 1 by that figure.
Which odds format should I use at ONG777?
Use whichever format you have the option to calculate quickly and accurately. Many players in Malaysia use Malay odds for handicap and over/under markets and decimal odds for accumulators, because decimal prices multiply together easily.
Why did the odds change on my bet slip?
Prices move as money comes in and as team news or in-play events change the picture. The slip shows the new price and, depending on your settings, asks you to accept it before the bet is placed.
